Questions about:

Ammonia liquid CAS#

The CAS # for the ammonia entry under liquids is actually for the gas. This was probably a mistake on DHS’s part, however, you are not technically required to inventory your aqueous ammonia solutions, also know as ammonium hydroxide.

Chemicals not on the list

For this effort, we are only focusing on the chemicals that DHS is concerned about. We will have to do this again, and will have enough time to plan a better more comprehensive inventory method. If you wish to take this opportunity to start your own inventory, you can reduce your effort for future campus inventories.

Common spaces

The application allows more than one 'owner' for a space. Each owner will be able to see only their chemicals (unless they entered the data, in which case they will be able to see everything they entered and everything they own.)

Gas cylinders stored outside (not in a room)

Assign the cylinders to a room (preferably one where they will be used) add the cylinders, and enter a note as to the real location.

Gas mixtures

You are not required to enter mixtures. DHS is only interested in the chemical of concern, so you can report just the portion of the cylinder that is the chemical of concern if you wish.

Nitric Acid

“I keep about 50 ml. of Nitric Acid in the lab. It is not in an original manufacturer's container as I "borrow'" it from another lab. What should I do? inventory it or not inventory it?” This does not need to be inventoried.

Picric Acid

The CAS # for trinitrophenol is the same as picric acid because they are the same chemical. Please report your picric acid under the same instructions from the inventory.

Shared spaces

The application allows more than one 'owner' for a space. Each owner will be able to see only their chemicals (unless they entered the data, in which case they will be able to see everything they entered and everything they own.)

Corson Hall

The inventory lists Corson Hall as “Dale R. Corson Bio Science Wing”

Contents vs. Container Size

For this inventory accurate data entry is preferred, but estimates are acceptable. If you have 2L in a one gallon jug, the actual contents of 2L is the preferred entry, but the maximum quantity of 1 gallon is also acceptable.

Gas Cylinder Capacity

What is the stored volume in a full standard size gas cylinder?
Our supplier (Air Gas) lists the following capacities for some common cylinders on the inventory:

  1. Acetylene = 132 cubic feet (larger cylinders are 330 cubic feet)
  2. Ammonia = 150 cubic feet
  3. Carbon Monoxide = 175 cubic feet
  4. Hydrogen = 261 cubic feet

Mudd Hall

The inventory lists Mudd Hall as “Seeley G. Mudd Bio Science Wing”

Nitrocellulose membranes

If you have nitrocellulose membranes, please estimate the weight for this inventory, it won’t be much but DHS is concerned about it.

Octanal - Are you sure you don’t mean Octanol?

This chemical is listed in the explosives section and is the common name for a powerful explosive agent.

Rooms without chemicals

We have 3 "chemicals of concern" in our main lab, but our "lab off-shoots" don't have any of the listed chemicals. Do we have to input these rooms also?

You do not need to list the spaces that did not have the chemicals, but it will help with future inventories if you assign them to a NetID now. If none of your spaces have DHS chemicals of concern, e-mail Mike Lonon with the building and rooms surveyed.

Who did the inventory

I didn't find a place to put "who did the inventory" and "who placed it on the web" on the web form.

The web application captures who entered the data, but we decided not to capture who conducted the physical inventory this time around.
